    Event Description:

The Butler County Historical Society meets 2 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Greenville City Hall. Join us for an interesting crime story by Historical Society member, Mollie Smith Waters.

The murder of Francis Bartow Lloyd in 1897 in Butler County made spectacular headlines. Lloyd was a Southern humorist who regaled readers with his tales of country life in rural Alabama during the 1890s. He had his own syndicated column with the character "Rufus Sanders" as principal storyteller, and his works were read as far away as Texas. Unfortunately, Lloyd's life was cut short at the age of 36. His murder and the trial of his killer made almost as many headlines as Lloyd's own writing did. Learn more at the July 30th meeting!

Mollie Waters has lived in Greenville for more than 40 years, and traces her family history back to the earliest settlers of Butler County. She is an English, theater, and speech instructor at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Greenville, and also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Fort Dale Cemetery Association
